22 June 2021 – The public authority audits the minimum wage in the UK every year in April. All UK businesses should pay the public national minimum wage (NMW) to workers up to the age of 23. The minimum wage that a worker gets depends upon which age section they fall into. To be qualified for the pay they should be at least school leaving age, which is for the most part 16 years of age in England. In case you are paid on a week after week or month to month basis, you should work out your comparable hourly rate to check you are being paid at least the minimum wage.
While most organisations abide by the UK’s minimum wage legislation, there have been cases of underpaying. Workers who think they have been underpaid should first check their UK work agreement and address their employer. The government’s employment and tax department (HMRC) can fine employers if it discovers they haven't been following UK minimum wage regulations, and if necessary can prosecute them for missing benefits.
