The Chancellor of the Exchequer outlined plans for the new National Living Wage (NLW) which will come into operation in April 2016. The NLW will be mandatory and will apply to all workers aged 25 and over. The rate is initially set at 7.20 GBP per hour. The current minimum wage (so-called national minimum wage) will continue to apply to workers aged 21–24 years. Forthcoming LPC recommendations will also cover the rate for the NLW. The government has been announcing the folowing figures per hour.

Minimum Wages in the UK are determined as follows:
- Adult rate for those above 21 years of age
- Development rate for those between the age of 18-20 years
- Youth Rate for those between the age of 16-17 years (16 year olds must be above the statutory school leaving age, which falls in the 1st summer after the 16th birthday).
- Apprentices Rate for those under the age of 19 or in the first year of training.
